Fake AI Brat Pitt Scammed €830,000

AI Deepfake Scam Leaves French Woman Broke

A French woman was scammed out of €830,000 by individuals impersonating actor Brad Pitt using AI-generated content, highlighting the growing risks of AI in cybercrime.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • The Scam Unfolds:
Anne, a 53-year-old interior designer, was contacted by someone claiming to be Brad Pitt’s mother on Instagram. This led to a year-and-a-half-long “relationship” with a fake Brad Pitt, complete with AI-generated photos and videos.

  • Requests for Money:
The scammers convinced Anne to transfer money under false pretenses, including paying customs fees for luxury gifts and funding cancer treatment. Anne, a cancer survivor herself, believed she was saving Pitt’s life and ultimately gave away her entire €775,000 divorce settlement.

  • Deepfake Deceptions:
The scammers used advanced AI to generate fake photos of Brad Pitt in hospital beds and even a fabricated news video featuring a deepfake anchor discussing Pitt’s relationship with Anne.

  • Why It Matters:
This case underscores how scammers are leveraging AI and deepfake technology to create convincing deceptions. It highlights the urgent need for public awareness, improved digital literacy, and stronger cybersecurity measures to combat AI-driven scams.

Anne is now broke, living in a single room, and has faced significant public ridicule. Despite this, her story is a wake-up call about the potential dangers of AI misuse and cyber fraud.
