Google’s Gemini Limits Election-Related Queries Globally

• Google has started to restrict queries made through Gemini when they relate to elections, in markets globally where elections are taking place.

• The restrictions on Gemini limit surfacing answers about election-related queries.

• The update is already live in the U.S. and has begun rolling out in India and all major countries where elections are taking place in the coming months.

• The switch in India comes just days after India issued an advisory before launching their new AI models.

• Queries regarding political parties, candidates, politicians now return a preset message.

• In some cases, the tool can still be gamed. It was found that the AI tool did show answers when passing on queries with typos.

Why It Matters: This move highlights Google’s concern about how the service might get weaponized, as well as produce inaccurate or misleading responses, especially during the sensitive period of elections.

Meet Devin: The World’s First AI Software Engineer

US-based startup Cognition has launched Devin, an AI software that debugs, writes, and deploys code. Devin is the first of its kind, capable of taking a simple command and turning it into a functioning website or software program.

The AI assistant has successfully passed several practical engineering interviews from leading AI companies. Devin has also completed real jobs on the freelancing platform Upwork.

Devin is the new state-of-the-art on the SWE-bench coding benchmark. In a demonstration provided by the firm, Devin shows off the system’s capability to quickly resolve errors by adding a print statement when they arise.

OpenAI’s Deals with Publishers Could Spell Trouble for Rivals

OpenAI has been forging deals with publishers, including some of France’s and Spain’s largest news publishers, to bring French and Spanish news content to OpenAI’s chatbot.

The partnership will put the organizations’ current events coverage in front of ChatGPT users and contribute to OpenAI’s ever-expanding volume of training data. OpenAI has revealed licensing deals with a handful of content providers at this point. OpenAI was offering publishers between $1 million and $5 million a year to access archives to train its GenAI models.

This could potentially edge out AI rivals also pursuing licensing agreements. If large tech companies can establish a high enough cost, they implicitly prevent future competition.
