Meta Challenges EU’s Digital Services Act Supervisory Fee

Meta Platforms has challenged a supervisory fee imposed by the European Union under its Digital Services Act (DSA). The fee, which amounts to 0.05% of Meta’s annual worldwide net income, is intended to cover the costs of monitoring compliance with new EU rules requiring online platforms to police content more effectively. Meta has disputed the methodology used to calculate the fees, arguing that companies reporting a loss don’t have to pay, resulting in some companies paying nothing and others paying a disproportionate amount. The company has taken its challenge to the Luxembourg-based General Court. The DSA levy applies to 20 very large online platforms, including Meta, Google, Apple, and TikTok, and two very large online search engines.
